Canadians Traveling to Europe in 2025 – What You Need to Know About ETIAS

Beginning in 2025, Canadian travelers heading to Europe’s Schengen Zone will need to apply for authorization under the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

While Canadians do not need a visa for short-term travel (under 90 days), the new ETIAS system will become mandatory for all leisure and business trips to Europe.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a digital travel authorization system developed by the European Union to enhance security and streamline the entry process for visa-exempt travelers. Once in effect, all Canadians visiting Europe for short stays will need to complete an online application and receive approval before boarding their flight.

How It Works:

  • Applicants submit personal information through a secure online portal

  • ETIAS runs a comprehensive background and security check

  • Most approvals are issued within minutes to a few days

  • The authorization is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires

This applies to travel to all 26 Schengen countries. For a full list of participating nations, please visit the official ETIAS website.

Have a Criminal Record? Act Now.

Travelers with a past criminal conviction may face delays or denials under ETIAS. If you have a record, we strongly recommend applying for a:

  • Canada Pardon (Record Suspension)

  • U.S. Entry Waiver (for travelers transiting through the United States)

Processing time for a Pardon or Record Suspension is currently 8 to 12 months, so starting now can help ensure you're ready when ETIAS becomes mandatory.
